"THOUGHT IT WAS BAND'S SPECIAL EFFECT"

COLONIAL TAVERN FIRE, DECEMBER 16, 1981 - PHOTO: BILL SANFORD, TORONTO SUNThe landmark Colonial Tavern on Yonge St. was heavily damaged by fire and smoke late last night. Toronto firefighters say the stubborn blaze apparently started beneath the stage in the centre of the main floor of the tavern. There were no injuries. One firefighter said the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical. The 40 or so patrons listening to a band left the tavern calmly. David Bailey, 21, stage manager for the band, Frank Soda, a heavy metal trio, said the band was on a half-hour break when he saw smoke curling around the ceiling. "At first I thought it was special effects, but then I realized it couldn't be," he said. The band managed to save some of its equipment.
